Abu Dharr al-Ghifāri (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: Some of the Companions said to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him): "O Messenger of Allah, the wealthy people have taken all the rewards. They pray as we pray and fast as we fast, but they give charity from their excess wealth." He said: "Has Allah not given you something to give as charity? Every utterance of ‘glory be to Allah’ is charity; every utterance of ‘Allah is the Greatest’ is charity; every utterance of ‘praise be to Allah’ is charity; every utterance of ‘there is no god but Allah’ is charity; commanding the right is charity; forbidding the wrong is charity; and there is charity in sexual intercourse." He was asked: "O Messenger of Allah, does one of us satisfy his desire and he is rewarded for that?" He replied: "What do you see if he satisfied it unlawfully, shall he not incur a sin? Likewise, if he satisfies it lawfully, he shall get a reward."
Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that some people said: "O Messenger of Allah, the people of wealth have won all the rewards and seized them exclusively. That is because they pray as we pray, fast as we fast, and give charity from their wealth that is extra to their needs. Thus, we are equal in terms of praying and fasting, but they exceed us by giving charity from the extra wealth Allah, the Almighty, has given them, an act we cannot afford to do." Thereupon, the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informed them that even though they missed the opportunity to give charity, they were still able to give charity by doing righteous deeds. Every utterance of “glory be to Allah” is charity; every utterance of "Allah is the Greatest" is charity; every utterance of "praise be to Allah" is charity; every utterance of "there is no god but Allah" is charity; commanding the right is charity; and forbidding the wrong is charity. Then he told them that there is charity in a man’s sexual intercourse with his wife. They wondered how a man can be rewarded for satisfying his own lust. The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) explained that just as a man would incur a sin if he satisfied his desire unlawfully, he also earns a reward when he satisfies it lawfully.
