Abu Tha’labah al-Khushani (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Allah, the Almighty, has indeed imposed obligations, so do not transgress them; He has forbidden things, so do not commit them; and He has kept silent about things out of mercy for you without forgetting [them], so do not search for them.”
The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) divided rulings into obligations, limits, and prohibitions. He warned against committing the prohibitions, transgressing the limits, and violating the obligations. He also mentioned a final category, which consists of what has not been mentioned. During the time of the revelation, it was not allowed to inquire about things lest they should be prescribed as a result. Now, however, every act has an established ruling in the Shariah.
