أحكام النساء
‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No man should be asked why he beat his wife."
عن عمر بن الخطَّاب -رضي الله عنه- مرفوعًا: «لا يُسأَل الرَّجُلُ: فيمَ ضَربَ امْرَأَتَه؟».
شرح الحديث :
This Hadīth is connected with Allah's statement: {As to those women on whose part you see ill-conduct, admonish them first, then refuse to share their best, and lastly beat them lightly if it is useful; but if they obey you, then do not seek any means of annoyance against them. Surely Allah is the Most High and Great} [Sūrat An-Nisā': 34] Beating is the last resort. A man could perhaps beat his wife over something that is embarrassing to mention. But if a man known for his righteousness beats his wife, he is not to be asked why. As for the one who is unsociable, he is to be asked why did he beat his wife. It is due to the fact that he does not have enough fear of Allah that would prevent him from inflicting harm or even hitting her, especially when she does not deserve to be hit. This Hadīth is weak, as mentioned before.
