Clean water (ماءٌ طاهِرٌ)

Clean water (ماءٌ طاهِرٌ)

أصول الفقه

المعنى الاصطلاحي :

Water that is clean in itself but does not purify other things.

الشرح المختصر :

Clean water (mā’ tāhir): is the water that is clean in itself, i.e. is free of impurity, but does not cleanse other things; i.e. it does not remove hadath (ritual impurity). It is permissible to use it in habitual actions such as drinking, cooking, cleaning, and the like; but it can not be used to remove major or minor impurity (ablution or ritual bath) or to remove impurity. [Note that in Islamic jurisprudence water is classified into three distinct categories: mutahhir (clean and cleansing); tahir (clean); and najas (impure).]
