توحيد الأسماء والصفات
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Pursue the right course and be as close to it as possible, and know that none of you will be saved by their deeds." They asked: "Not even you, O Messenger of Allah?" He replied: "Not even me, unless Allah encompasses me in mercy and favor from Him."

This Hadīth indicates that the extent of uprightness depends on one's ability. "Pursue the right course and be as close to it as possible." In other words, try to make all your deeds correct and righteous, as much as you can, for no matter how pious a person may be, he will inevitably err. That is why he is ordered to follow the right path and keep close to it as much as he can. Then the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And know that none of you will be saved by their deeds", meaning: the deeds of anyone will not save them from Hell-fire, because people’s deeds are too little compared to the gratitude and rights due to their Lord. It is only that Allah, Glorified and Exalted, bestows His mercy upon His slaves and thus forgives them. When the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "None of you will be saved by their deeds", they asked: "Not even you?" He replied: "Not even me, unless Allah encompasses me in mercy and favor from Him." As clearly indicated, even the Prophet’s deeds would not save him if it were not for the fact that Allah bestowed His favor upon him and forgave all his past and future sins. So regardless of a slave’s high rank and closeness in the sight of his Lord, he will not be saved from Hellfire by virtue of his deeds.
