التعريف :
An article or a sum of money given to someone else for safekeeping.
المعنى الاصطلاحي :
Wealth left with someone in order to keep it without paying a fee.
الشرح المختصر :
"Wadee‘ah" (deposit) is something that is deposited with someone in order to keep it without a fee and without having the right to freely use it. This applies to things like safety deposit boxes in hotels, banks, etc. As for bank "wadee‘ah", they are not included in this definition because banks do not keep money as it is; they rather act freely concerning it. Bank "wadee‘ah" are of two types: 1. Call "wadee‘ah": it is called demand deposit or current account. It is when a client deposits his money in a bank and he can withdraw it whenever he likes without earning profits therefrom. 2. Saving "wadee‘ah": it is when a client deposits his money in a bank in return for profit or interest which he gets within a certain period that is previously agreed upon. This type of "wadee‘ah" has many forms; one of these forms is permissible, namely that which is based on a "mudārabah" (profit and loss) contract, while all other forms are forbidden.
التعريف اللغوي المختصر :
"Wadee‘ah": name of anything that is deposited, i.e. kept. Derived from "wad‘", which means keeping, so "wadee‘ah" means something that is kept. Original meaning of "wad‘": leaving, abandoning. "Wadā‘": quitting, parting. "Mustawda‘": a place where the "wadee‘ah" is kept.
